William was born about 1715 in Cople Parish, Westmoreland, Virginia. He married Elizabeth Blowers, daughter of John Blowers, a wealthy land owner. Records show he paid taxes on 294 acres of land in Prince William County in 1754, however, by this time it is believed he had moved to Halifax County near Martinsville, VA near the "Great Wagon Road". He was a merchant of note. On a trip to Philadelphia, he passed through Winchester, VA where his Son Samuel met his future wife, Sarah Bryan. Interestingly, Sarah's sister married Daniel Boone.
William passed away about 1766 in Prince William, Colony of Virginia.
