Biography

Manetho B. Bailey was born in February 1836^[1] in Todd County, Kentucky. He was the son of John Armstrong Bailey and Martha Margaret Coleman. He passed away after 1900 probably in Towner County, North Dakota where he was living at the time of the 1900 census.

Manetho was named in his father's will dated 22 June 1866, Todd County, Kentucky; proved 11 October 1869.^[2]

"Third. I will and bequeath to my two Sons, M B Bailey and M P Bailey, the farm upon which I now reside Supposed to contain Six hundred and sixty acres."

Later in the will a precise description is given of how the tract is to be divided between the two sons.

Manetho and his son, Ernest, left Kentucky sometime after 1880. By the time of the 1900 Federal census they are living and farming in Greenfield, Towner County, North Dakota. No record has been found for Manetho after the 1900 census.

Military

He registered for the U.S. Civil War Draft during the month of February 1864, 3rd Congressional District, Todd County, Kentucky: Bailey, M B; age 25, white, Farmer, Unmarried, born Kentucky.^[3] There is no record that he served in the military during the Civil War.

Marriage

Manetho married Nancy Unknown about 1868 in Todd County, Kentucky. She was born about 1845 in Kentucky and passed away between 1 June 1870 and 1 June 1880 (she is on the 1870 census, but not 1880). Manetho is listed as a widower on the 1880 and 1900 census records. They had one son, Ernest E. Bailey, born December 1869 in Todd County, Kentucky. Ernest is living with his father in 1900 and is still single at that time. The birth year given for Ernest on the 1900 census, 1839, may not be correct. The 1870 and 1880 census records list his age as two and twelve, respectively. He may have been born December 1868.
