Biography

William was born in 1900 in Detroit, MI to Clarence Bailey and Charlotte Conover. His father was a practicing dentist there. In 1908, the family moved to Dixonville, Oregon where they owned a very successful 50-acre fruit farm they called Conleycott Orchards. The name combined the maiden names of his parents' mothers. After finishing school, William worked on the farm, eventually taking it over from his parents. He married Winona Trussell in 1927 in Dixonville. They stayed on the farm and raised a son there. His parents continued to live on the farm, though his father had become more focused on being the editor of a farm organization bulletin. William also got involved in the local Grange, and was an avid outdoorsman, even going twice to Africa to hunt. The farm switched from fruit to Christmas trees in the 1950s. After probably having lived in the same house nearly all his life, he passed away there (in Douglas County, OR) in 1982 and is buried with other members of his family in Roseburg Memorial Gardens in nearby Rosebury, OR.
