In 1803 he was listed as an assistant to the secretary's office in a list of monthly writers of the British East India Company at Fort Marlborough, Bencoolen, Sumatra.[1]
At the time of his marriage in 1805 he was working as a Monthly Writer for the East India Company at Fort Marlborough, Bencoolah, Sumatra.[1]
In 1818 he was left with a contingent of six soldiers at Samanka Bay in Southern Sumatra to hold the line against the Dutch, per the order of Stamford Raffles, the Lieutenant Governor of Bencoolen.[2][3] Baillie stood his ground, refusing to lower the flag to the Dutch,[4] although eventually he backed down when higher ups ordered Raffles to stand down from his plot to gain a British anchorage in the Sunda Strait.[5][6]
