Charles Edward Jacob Bailey was born on 15 February, 1869, in Kensington, Middlesex, England, to James and Elizabeth (Pratt) Bailey[1][2].
At the time of the 1871 Census Charles Bailey, 1, and his parents James, Gas Stoker, and Elizabeth, both 27, and infant brother Henry, 2 months, were living at 2 Vale of Health, Kensal Road, Chelsea, London, England. According to the Census, James was born in Romford, Essex, Elizabeth and Charles were both born in Kensington, and Henry was born in Chelsea[3].
We don't know where Charles and his mother were at the time of the 1881 Census, as they don't appear with Charles's father or siblings on that Census. See Research Notes.
The 1891 Census recorded Charles Bailey, 21, Gas Stoker, living with his parents, John, 47, G Labourer, and Eliza, 48, and siblings John, 17, Gas Stoker, Annie, 15, and Walter, 9, In School, at Stockton Mews, Kensington, London, England[4]. All the members of the household were reportedly born in London, except John, Sr., who was born in Essex.
Charles Bailey, 25, Bachelor and Labourer, married Rosa Annie Kaiser (Kaiser-3356), 23, Spinster, at Trinity Church, Paddington, London on 6 October 1895 in the presence of Ada Evans and E. Hastings, Rev. Alfred S. Ball officiating, after Banns. Charles's father was John Bailey, Labourer, and Rosa's father was Charles Kaiser, Baker. The residence of the newly married couple was 8 Bishops Road[5].
Charles and Rose had 9 children:
At the time of Annie Elizabeth's baptism in 1896, the family's address was 67 St. Ervans Rd., and Charles's occupation was Stoker.
At the time of the 1901 Census, Charles and Rose were living at 9 Western Dwellings, Kensington, with Annie, 5, Marie, 3, and Lizzie, 2, and Charles was working as a General Labourer[6]. Living next door at 10 Western Dwellings were Charles's parents and brother, John J Bailey, 58, a General Labourer, born in Essex, his wife Aliza (Elizabeth) 57, born in Marleybone, and their son Walter A., 19, and Annie M. Carpenter, 25, Laundress (Charles's sister), and her son John James, 7 mos., were visiting[[1]].
Charles and Rose Bailey continued to live in Kensington until they emigrated to Canada in July, 1906, arriving in Montreal from Liverpool aboard the SS Southward on 14 July, stating their destination as Manitoba[7].
Whether the family lived for a time in Manitoba we don't know, but by the time of the 1911 Census of Canada, Charles and Rose were living at 173 Harris Street (subsequently renamed Georgia Street), Vancouver with Annie, 16, Marie, 14, Lizzie, 12, (Charles) Edward, 8, May, 7, Rose, 5, and James, 2[8]. Charles Sr. was working 54 hours/week in the Gas Works as a Stoker, and his income over the previous year was $840, and daughter Annie was working in a Candy Factory 54 hours/week, and her income over the previous year was reportedly $250. Both Annie and her father reportedly worked 50 of the preceding 52 weeks. The family's religious affiliation was Anglican, and all but the youngest three children could both read and write.
The 1921 Census recorded Charles Bailey and his family living at 1036 Keefer Street, Ward 4, Vancouver, a 6-room single-occupancy dwelling made of wood that the Bailey family rented for $20/month[9]. The family were adherents of the Church of England, could all read and write, except 5-year old Frederick, spoke English, but not French, and cited their nationality as English and their citizenship as Canadian. According to the Census, all the family members except the youngest four were born in England and immigrated to Canada in 1906, and the last four children were born in B.C. The 1931 Census of Canada recorded Charles, 63, Fireman, Boats, and Rose Bailey, 60, Homemaker, both born England of parents born England, living at 1027 Georgia Street, Vancouver, with their children Rose, 24, born Alberta, Machine Operator, Clothes Factory, James, 21, born B.C., Laborer, Door Factory, Lillian, 18, born B.C., Factory Hand, Soapworks, and Frederick, 15, Student[10]. Charles was unemployed and had been for 33 weeks in the year preceding the Census, and had earned $300 in the year previous. Daughter Rose was unemployed, and had been for 22 weeks in the year preceding the Census, having earned $285 in the year previous. Son James, was also unemployed, having been so for 32 weeks in the year preceding the Census, 6 of which were due to an accident, and having earned $165.00 in the previous year. Lillian was employed, having been unemployed for 16 weeks in the year preceding the Census, and had been at work on the day of the Census, and had earned $325 in the year preceding the Census.
Charles was widowed on 17 May, 1955.
Charles Edward Jacob Bailey suffered from arteriosclerotic heart disease for 3 years before his death on 6 October, 1957, aged 88, in Vancouver, British Columbia, of a heart attack[11]. At the time of his death, Charles's residential address was 3534 48th Avenue East, Vancouver, British Columbia.
According to his obituary, "On October 6, 1957, Charles Edward Jacob Bailey of 3534 E. 48th St., formerly of 4791 Triumph St., (died) in his 89th year."[12].
Charles was buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, where he shares a headstone with wife Rose[13].
