Biography

Charles Edward Jacob Bailey was born on 15 February, 1869, in Kensington, Middlesex, England, to James and Elizabeth (Pratt) Bailey[1][2].

At the time of the 1871 Census Charles Bailey, 1, and his parents James, Gas Stoker, and Elizabeth, both 27, and infant brother Henry, 2 months, were living at 2 Vale of Health, Kensal Road, Chelsea, London, England. According to the Census, James was born in Romford, Essex, Elizabeth and Charles were both born in Kensington, and Henry was born in Chelsea[3].

We don't know where Charles and his mother were at the time of the 1881 Census, as they don't appear with Charles's father or siblings on that Census. See Research Notes.

The 1891 Census recorded Charles Bailey, 21, Gas Stoker, living with his parents, John, 47, G Labourer, and Eliza, 48, and siblings John, 17, Gas Stoker, Annie, 15, and Walter, 9, In School, at Stockton Mews, Kensington, London, England[4]. All the members of the household were reportedly born in London, except John, Sr., who was born in Essex.

Charles Bailey, 25, Bachelor and Labourer, married Rosa Annie Kaiser (Kaiser-3356), 23, Spinster, at Trinity Church, Paddington, London on 6 October 1895 in the presence of Ada Evans and E. Hastings, Rev. Alfred S. Ball officiating, after Banns. Charles's father was John Bailey, Labourer, and Rosa's father was Charles Kaiser, Baker. The residence of the newly married couple was 8 Bishops Road[5].

Charles and Rose had 9 children:

  • Annie Elizabeth, born 29 December, 1895, and baptized on 22 March 1896 at Christ Church, Notting Hill, London, England;
  • Maria (Baillie-685) born in May, 1897, in Kensington;
  • Elizabeth Rose (Bailey-16374), born 18 November, 1898, in Kensington;
  • Charles Edward (Bailey-33253), born 5 February, 1902, in Kensington;
  • May Rose (Bailey-33254), born in the 3rd Quarter of 1904 in Kensington;
  • Rose (Bailey-16265), born ca. January, 1906, in British Columbia;
  • James (Bailey-33255), born in October, 1909, in Vancouver, British Columbia;
  • Lillian Pearl (Bailey-33256), born ca. 1912, in Vancouver, British Columbia; and
  • Walter Frederick (Bailey-33257), born 12 March, 1916, in Vancouver, British Columbia;

At the time of Annie Elizabeth's baptism in 1896, the family's address was 67 St. Ervans Rd., and Charles's occupation was Stoker.

At the time of the 1901 Census, Charles and Rose were living at 9 Western Dwellings, Kensington, with Annie, 5, Marie, 3, and Lizzie, 2, and Charles was working as a General Labourer[6]. Living next door at 10 Western Dwellings were Charles's parents and brother, John J Bailey, 58, a General Labourer, born in Essex, his wife Aliza (Elizabeth) 57, born in Marleybone, and their son Walter A., 19, and Annie M. Carpenter, 25, Laundress (Charles's sister), and her son John James, 7 mos., were visiting[[1]].

Charles and Rose Bailey continued to live in Kensington until they emigrated to Canada in July, 1906, arriving in Montreal from Liverpool aboard the SS Southward on 14 July, stating their destination as Manitoba[7].

Whether the family lived for a time in Manitoba we don't know, but by the time of the 1911 Census of Canada, Charles and Rose were living at 173 Harris Street (subsequently renamed Georgia Street), Vancouver with Annie, 16, Marie, 14, Lizzie, 12, (Charles) Edward, 8, May, 7, Rose, 5, and James, 2[8]. Charles Sr. was working 54 hours/week in the Gas Works as a Stoker, and his income over the previous year was $840, and daughter Annie was working in a Candy Factory 54 hours/week, and her income over the previous year was reportedly $250. Both Annie and her father reportedly worked 50 of the preceding 52 weeks. The family's religious affiliation was Anglican, and all but the youngest three children could both read and write.

The 1921 Census recorded Charles Bailey and his family living at 1036 Keefer Street, Ward 4, Vancouver, a 6-room single-occupancy dwelling made of wood that the Bailey family rented for $20/month[9]. The family were adherents of the Church of England, could all read and write, except 5-year old Frederick, spoke English, but not French, and cited their nationality as English and their citizenship as Canadian. According to the Census, all the family members except the youngest four were born in England and immigrated to Canada in 1906, and the last four children were born in B.C. Their Census information was:

  • Charles Sr., 65, was a Tugboat Fireman (Code 1-220-600) and earned $750 in the previous year, but he was unemployed as of June 1, 1921 and had been unemployed for a total of 20 weeks of the previous year, but not due to illness;

Research Notes

There is a Charles Bailey, 13, in Mile End Old Town Workhouse School at the time of the 1881 Census. Is this our Charles Bailey?[14]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Charles by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Charles:
