Madeleine Bailly was born about 1647 in the parish of Saint-Jacques-de-la-Boucherie in Paris, daughter of Guillaume Bailly and Barbe Seillier. After losing both parents, she came to Canada in 1671 at about age 24.[1]

Madeleine had a marriage contract to Jean Brière annulled on 4 June 1672.

She married Guillaume Vanier dit Lafontaine in Quebec City on 5 July 1672.[2]

They settled at Quebec City where they had a daughter, Anne, who was baptized 06 April 1673. Two years later they had a second daughter, Marie Madeleine (03 January 1675). Another two years passed and a son Nicolas was born.(16 July 1677).[3] Nicolas died at age two and was buried at Quebec City 14 January 1680. They continued to live in the basse ville of Quebec City in the 1681 census,[4] which lists Madeleine as a midwife. They had another son, Jean, who was baptized 21 June 1681, followed by daughter Marie Marguerite (29 March 1684) and another son Pierre Thomas (08 June 1687).

Her husband, Guillaume Vanier, was accidentally killed in 1687 when his rifle discharged on return from the war against the Iroquois. He was buried at Montreal on 27 August 1687.[10]


Madeleine gave birth to an illegitimate daughter (no marriage record found) named Marie Jeanne, whose father is unknown on 20 February 1692 at Charlesbourg, . The girl died and was buried 07 March 1695 at Charlesbourg.

Madeleine remarried on 27 September 1697 to Joseph Fernando[11] in Charlesbourg. Joseph, a soldier with the Levilliers Company, was born about 1643. They had no children together. Fernando was buried 23 November 1718.

Madeleine Bailly died 26 March 1734 at Saint-Laurent, on Montréa island.[12]

Arrivée à Québec le 15/08/1671 à bord du vaisseau Le St-Jean-Baptiste

Elle arrive avec 250 livres de dot dont 50 livres du Roy.

Elle fut Sage-femme.

Elle fait un contrat de mariage avec Jean Brière en avril 1672 qui fut annulé:

Mariage le 05/07/1672 à Québec (Notre-Dame).[14]

Décédé le 26/08/1687; Il est tué accidentellement par une décharge de son fusil en revenant de la guerre contre les Iroquois. Il est inhumé à Montréal (Ville-Marie) le 27/08/1687.[15][16]

  6. Pierre Thomas: Né le 07/06/1687, baptisé 07/07/1687 Québec; décédé le 20/03/1711, sép. 21/03/1711 Charlesbourg. 1 mariage avec Marie Anne Bourbeau 09/02/1711 Charlesbourg[17]

Au recensement de 1681, ils sont inscrits dans la Prévoté des Maréchaux (à Québec). Guillaume est dit avoir 36 ans; sa femme Magdeleine Bailly, 34 ans; Le couple a 3 enfants; Anne, 8 ans; Marie (Madeleine), 7 ans ; Jacques (Jean), 4 mois. Le couple possède 1 fusil.[18]


Madeleine Bailly est mère d'un enfant illégitime, père inconnu, (Marie Jeanne Bailly née et baptisée le 21/02/1692 à Charlesbourg, sépulture: 07/03/1695 Charlesbourg)[17]


M 2) FERNANDO, Joseph Soldat de la compagnie de Monsieur De Levilliers. Né vers 1643, décédé le 23/11/1718 Montréal

Mariage le 27/09/1697 à Charlesbourg[19] Aucun enfant[20]


Décédée et inhumée le 26 mars 1734, à Saint-Laurent de Montréal, Âgée d’environ 56 ans. Présents à ses funérailles furent son fils Jean Vanier et son gendre Julien Leblanc.[21] Jean Vanier signe, Julien Leblanc ne peut signer.
