Samuel was born in 1877 in Killean, Scotland, United Kingdom.
He married Mary Elizabeth Hanger in about 1906 in Bloemfontein; she was 36 years old and he 28; a child was born of this marriage in July 1907. The child (un-baptised) died in July and the mother a few days later on 2 August 1907.
Samuel now added "Hanger" to his name and called himself Samuel Lynch Hanger-Bain. He married Elizabeth Whitefoot Marshall Henderson, aged 22, and who came from Kirkintilloch in Scotland. They married in Johannesburg on 24 January 1911.[1]

There was a daughter born of this marriage; Elizabeth Marshall Henderson Bain. This child died, aged 5 weeks, on 21 September 1911.[2]
The next archival record of Samuel Lynch Hanger-Bain id his being charged by the Government in a criminal case; detail unclear.[3]
In 1913 Elizabeth took legal action, first for the restitution of conjugal rights[4] and then for divorce.[5]
Samuel next married Elizabeth Fredrika Maria Louisa Juhre[6]

As before, the marriage did not last; in 1919 Elizabeth Fredrika sued for divorce:[7][8]
Samuel, aged 57, then married 43 year old Maud Winifred Trow in Johannesburg on 2 June 1936.[9]

Samuel was 74 years old and resident at Plot 4, Weltevrede, Florida, Roodepoort, 8 February 1954.[10][11][12]
