Biography

Daughter of George Bain and Unknown Bain Wife of Thoms Godbey Jr Mother of Thomas Godbey III Sister of Elizabeth Bain [1]

Ann Godby was recorded as 20 years of age "or thereabouts" in 1648 . Abstracted from depositions in Norfolk County Clerk's Office by Charles F. McIntosh, William and Mary Quarterly, 25:1, 38.

Ann Godbey was hailed before Lower Norfolk court Dec. 15, 1659 "Whereas Ann Godby, the Wife of Tho: Godby, hath Contrary to an order of ye Court bearing date In May, 1655," for calling Nick Robinson's wife a witch and fined 200 pounds of tobacco, paid by her husband.

Ann was fined 200 pounds of tobacco for attending a Quaker meeting at the house of Richard Russell in 1663. In 1666 Russell bequeathed her his books, as did William Bordas "my books and instruments of navigation" in his will recorded 10/15/1667. John Jacobs of Elizabeth River, whose will was recorded 5/12/1681 left "to Ann Godbey my chest all that it contains in it," and names her sole executrix.

Ann named executrix of husband Thomas Godby's estate in his Will proved 21 Feb. 1686/7, Norfolk County Wills, pp. 102-103, Book 5, f. 6 (Will dated 28 Sept. 1671)

Much of this applies to Ann Jacob wife of Anne Bain's son Thomas, and not to Anne Bain.

Probate record for Anne Bain's husband Thomas Godby Sr

https://www.ancestry.com/discoveryui-content/view/47396:7832?ssrc=pt&tid=2509059&pid=392568337132 and https://www.ancestry.com/imageviewer/collections/48431/images/VAColonialAbstractsIII-005796-465?pId=342188

Anne Bain's Thomas Sr died Bef. 15 Feb 1653/54 so he could not have paid 200 pounds of tobacco 1659, therefore this is Ann Jacob wife of Thomas Jr. Same for the probate quoted, which is for Thomas Jr. Therefore Ann Jacob was still alive 1686. Anne Bain was still alive Aft. 15 Feb 1653/54.

As Thomas Jr was still a minor, we know the following was Anne Bain and not Ann Jacob 25 Oct 1652 Anne Godby, conducted away the maid servant of Lewes Farmall, fined 200 lb tobacco https://www.ancestry.com/imageviewer/collections/48431/images/VAColonialAbstractsIII-005765-434?pId=342157

Same argument says this is also Anne Bain 16 Oct 1653 Thomas Godby to pay James Smith 40 lb tobacco for wife failing to appear to court https://www.ancestry.com/imageviewer/collections/48431/images/VAColonialAbstractsIII-005786-455?pId=342178

1 Nov 1650 Thomas and wife Ann won a defamation suit against Richard Becke and his wife https://www.ancestry.com/imageviewer/collections/49230/images/FLHG_LowerNorfolkCntyVA-0426?pId=61673

29 Jan 1648 Thomas and Anne Godbey testified regarding a tobacco transaction. Thomas Says he's about 30 and Anne about 20 https://www.ancestry.com/imageviewer/collections/49230/images/FLHG_LowerNorfolkCntyVA-0351?pId=61598
