Mary was a Surgical Nurses for Surgeon's in Tennessee.

It was not Mary A. Loomis who served as a Nurse, it was Mary A. Vanpelt, The confusion happens because in 1870 she remarried Dr. Loomis and applied for her Pension and her husband, 1st Lt. George W. Vanpelt, pension, as letters and card indicates.
"Loomis served under a surgeon by the name of H.J.Merrick, MD. She then went on to the Number 20 hospital, also in Nashville, until May. Once again,
Loomis served as a matron, this time under the surgeon J.R. Goodwin, MD" (excerpt from wikipedia)
Her 1st husband, Capt. George W. Van Pelt, "died in the Battle of Chickamauga in September 1863."
??? Loomis left the service shortly after in November.

"Nurse" is on her Pension card, wouldn't that be considered her RANK? and a Prefix?
