Gilbert was born in about 1455 in Scotland, the son of Gilbert Baird of Posso, Peeblesshire. He married Christine Lindsay and their children included John, Andrew, and two daughters, who married respectively William Geddes of the Rauchane family and Thomas Nasmyth. Gilbert died 9 September 1513 in the Battle of Flodden Field, Northumberland, England, according to information given on the Clan MacFarlane and associated clans genealogy website.
