Biography

Kent (historic flag)
Thomas Baker was born in Kent, England.

Thomas BAKER.[1]

Thomas was born in about 1823 in Westerham Kent England, his fathers name James. The family were residing together at the time of the 1841 census.[2]

George Baker Male 14 1827 -
Henry Baker Male 11 1830 -
Frederic Baker Male 9 1832 -
Robert Baker Male 7 1834

He married Ann LAUNDON on 19 Jan 1857 at Glenfield Leicestershire after the calling of the bans.

Thomas was believed to be a corporal in the Rifle Brigade 2nd Battalion (1857) and a member of the Kings Royal Rifle Corps, 4th battalion (1861).

At the time of the 1861 census Ann and Thomas are residing at the Barracks at Winchester in Hampshire. Thomas is now listed as a sergeant in the army and they have two children. Alma Mary aged 3 and Thomas listed as being 1 week old. It would appear that Thomas has two further children with Ann. Arthur Frederick BAKER was born on 1st April 1861 and Eldred Laundon BAKER was born on 28 Jul 1865. The birth of Arthur Frederick was registered at Winchester on 4th April 1861, by his father Thomas. The census that year was taken that year on the night of 6th June. That would make Arthur 9 weeks old on census night. He and Thomas could be the same person. Arthur Frederick does not appear in 1861 census, but Thomas snr does. Thomas is listed on Eldred's birth certificate as an agricultural labourer, so presumably he had left the army by that time.

In 1871, he is listed as a visitor in a household names BARNES in St Paul Northgate Canterbury. He is listed as an army pensioner. With him is his daughter Alma and some others by the name of GROOMBRIDGE. It would appear the couple are living separately by this time.

Ann finally marries Edward Roberts in 1878 and is listed as a widow on the marriage certificate. It is assumed Thomas has died by this time. No record can be found of his death. Could he have gone with his son Arthur/Thomas to Canada?

Notes

The Kings Rifle Corps unit's name was not changed until after the Napoleonic Wars; first to The Duke of York's Own Rifle Corps and then in 1830 to the King's Royal Rifle Corps. In 1858 the Rifle Depot at Winchester was made their headquarters. During the rest of the 1800s the unit was active in China, Canada (Wolseley Expedition), Afghanistan, India, Burma and South Africa - Wikipedia.
