- His will was signed September 20, 1720. It provided for the purchaseof "one silver salver of 5 pounds sterling" to be delivered to the UpperChurch of South Farnham parish withing 2 years of his death. PeterGodfrey was willed "my best saddle and bridle" and John Godfrey (son ofPeter and Elizabeth) was to have ten pounds sterling to be paid withing12 months "after the deceased of my beloved wife Amy." ElizabethBradbourn was bequeathed 200 pounds of tobacco "or value therof to bepaid unto her in goods." Anne White and Elizabeth hart (sisters ofJoseph Baker) living in Cow Lane, West Smithfield, London were eachbequeathed "twenty thousand pounds of good merchantable tob." to bedelivered within 3 years, packed in hhds weighing 750 or 800 poundsneat." Baker gave "unto my sd sister Anne and her husband Richard Whiteall the money and goods they have in their hands of mine." Negroes Tomand Sue were held in trust for Joseph Gatewood (godson of Joseph Baker)until he was of age. William Gatewood was willed 2 cows and calves.john ferguson (husband of Sarah Gatewood) was to receive "one gold ringof the value and cost of twenty shillings." Henry Gatewood was rememberedwith a new suit of clothes. A special provision was made for Amy Bakerin the bequest to James Gatewood who received all the land and plantationbought of Thomas Wheeler provided he not "debar molest or uncomode hismother from tending using or managing any portion or parcel of the sdland during the term of her natural life" Each of the Gatewood children,not mentioned in his will, were to receive a gold ring of the value of 20shillings.
