James Mansfield Baker was born on December 25, 1844 in White County, Tennessee, United States, son of Jonathan Lewis Baker (~1818–~1896) and Manerva Cole (1818–~1875).

James married Elizabeth Jane Mitchell (born on October 30, 1856 in Van Buren, Hardeman, Tennessee; daughter of Martin Mitchell and Angela (Moore) Mitchell).

In the 1860 census James (age 14) was at 8th District, White, Tennessee, United States.[1] Jonathan Baker 44, Manera Baker 44, Willian Baker 17, James Baker 14, Calvin Baker 12, Solomon Baker 9, Henry Baker 7, Sarrah Baker 5, Daniel Baker 3, Lee A Baker 1.

In the 1870 census James (age 20) was in White, Tennessee, United States.[2] Jonathan Baker 55, Manerva Baker 53, James M Baker 20, Solomon Baker 18, Henry Baker 16, Sarah C Baker 14, Daniel Baker 12, Leann Baker 10, Amanda Baker 8.

In the 1920 census James (age 80) was the married head of household in Civil District 4, Putnam, Tennessee, United States.[6] James Baker 80 years, wife Bettie Baker 75 years, son Haseal Baker 33 years, daughter-in-law Zillie Baker 27 years, grandchild Minnie B Baker 10 years, grandchild Lonie L Baker 5 years, grandchild James O Baker 2 years 9 months, grandchild Willie C Baker 7 months.

James died on May 28, 1920 in White County, aged 75. He was buried in Tollison Cemetery, Sparta, Tennessee.[7]
