Emanuel Baker was born about 1824.
The 1870 U.S. Census for Eldorado Township, Benton, Iowa, finds Emanuel Baker as the head of a large household. He is 45 years old, white, born in Pennsylvania. His wife, Matilda Baker, is also 45 and born in PA. The following children are listed in the household: Simon P. Baker, male, 18 years, born in PA; William Baker, male, 17 years, born in PA; Mary Baker, female 15 years, born in Iowa; Sarah Baker, female 11 years, born in Iowa; Lydia Baker, female, 8 years, born in Iowa; and Emma Baker, female, 5 years, born in Iowa.
The 1880 U.S. Census for the same location finds Emanuel Baker as the 55-year-old head of household. His parents were both bornin Pennsylvania. He is married, white, and a farmer. Also listed are two daughters: Liyda E. Baker (Lydia), 17 years, born Iowa, and Emma J. Baker, 15 years, born in Iowa.
