Martin Baker was born abt. 1605 in possibly in Plymouth, the County of Deveonshire, England. During Court in York County in the Colony of VA on 7 January 1633/34 a Martin Becker had reported that he was from Plymouth, England and was a Merchant. A Martin Baker was given a Land patent for 600 Acres on 24 April 1635. In the year 1656, the immigration list for Virginia shows, Martin Baker, as a sponsor for at least 20 person in New Kent County, VA and by 1659/1660 this Martin Baker seems to be the High Sheriff of New Kent County. It would seem that this Martin Baker died prior to the year 1684, because he is not listed in the Vestry book or Register book for St. Peter's Parish of that County, but a Christopher Baker is listed. The Vestry Book & Register for St. Peter's Parish spells Christoper's first name sometimes as thus: "Xotpher". It is rather interesting that this Christopher Baker land seems to be in the same processioning area as some of surnames of those Martin Baker brought over in the year 1656, such as Turner, West, Smith, Woody, and Rich/Ritch. Perhaps there is some kind of connection.
These may have been some of Martin Baker's children:

In the year 1662, Martin Baker was still very much alive when Thomas Tinsely bought 300 more acres of land from Martin, on the south side of the York River in New Kent County.
"Baker" can also be spelled "Becker."
The Genealogy of this branch of the Baker family dates from the arrival in Virginia of Martin Baker, a merchant from Plymouth, England, who took title to 650 acres in York County, VA., adjoining the lands of Captain Nicholas Martiau, born in France in 1591. These lands were the site of the battle and surrender of the British Army under Lord Cornwallis at Yorktown, VA. Marin's arrival in Virginia was about 1625. Fifty or sixty years later, the name Martin Baker is recorded as Sheriff of New Kent County, VA., this is probably Martin Baker, Jr. Martin Baker III of Hanover County was probably born about 1715 and died in 1786. He married Temperance Walton and had eight children. He was a very wealthy man as the bond of his executors was fixed at $100,000.00 Their descendants were Martin Baker IV, William Baker, Samuel Baker, whose daughter Anne Baker married Wingfield Cosby, Mary Baker who married John Walton, Temperance Baker who married William Sharp and Jemima Keziah Baker who married Thomas Lane. Martin Baker IV was born in Hanover County, VA, but moved to Richmond in early life and became a large real estate owner. He married Elizabeth Swift, daughter of Thomas Swift and Amediah Duke. Later in life, Martin Baker IV moved to Orange County, VA., and died there.
Martin Baker V, born May 16, 1779, in Richmond, VA and died in Gordonsville, Orange County, VA, Oct 5, 1835, married Feb 22, 1816, Maria Swift, born Aug 2, 1793, in Louisa County, VA., and died June 19, 1857. She was the daughter of Cleavers Swift and _______, and granddaughter of Thomas Swift and Amediah Duke.
