Biography

James Edward Baker was born in 1787 at Ulcombe, Kent, England.

He married Frances Skinner on 21 May 1809 in Barming, Kent, England.

He, his wife and several of their children all ended up in South Australia, however they do not appear to have travelled on the same ship. There was an Edward Baker on the Isabella Watson in 1846, which was the voyage on which his 20-year-old son George migrated.[1] The Biographical Index of South Australians also reports that he migrated on Isabella Watson on 14 May 1846.[2]

List of children:

  • James born (?) and baptised on 15 March 1811, died 28 March 1811.[3] Unconfirmed trees on Ancestry.com suggest James may have had a brother George baptised and died on the same days, but no records found yet (Dec 2017)
  • Eliza 1812-1893 stayed in England, married John Maynard
  • Frances 1814-1877 Married William Baker Costen June 1833 Maidstone (they migrated to SA on Pestonjee Bomanjee 1838), Stephen List December 1839 Adelaide, then William Nottle, Gawler River 1870

  • William Henry 1831-1910, married Mary Alderman in 1852 in Gawler

His death on 7 July 1873 was recorded at Gawler River in the district of Port Gawler.[4]

His name appears on the same headstone as Jane (his daughter-in-law), George (his son, Jane's husband), Frances (his wife) and Bruce Henry Baker (aged 2 months in March 1874). He is also recorded as being buried at Carclew cemetery (now in Penfield Gardens, adjacent to the former Carclew Primitive Methodist Church).[5] managed by the City of Playford, however no headstone remains.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with James by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with James:
