Henry Baker was born on 5 May 1856 in East Woodhay, Hampshire, England to John Baker and Maria (Rose) Baker. His birth was registered in Kingsclere, Hampshire in the second quarter of the year, with mother's maiden name Rose.[1]
In 1861 Harry Baker (age 4, Scholar) lived at Turnpike in East Woodhay with his father John (29, Agricultural Labourer), mother Maria (30), and three siblings: Jane (6, Scholar), George (3, Scholar), and David (1), as well as his grandmother Lucy Rose (69).[2]
In 1871 Henry Baker (age 14, Carpenter) was a lodger in Greenham, Berkshire in the household of Arthur Andrews (28, Carpenter) - also in the household were Arthurs' wife Hannah (28, Laundress), son Henry A (3), and daughter May E (1).[3] Henry's family still lived in East Woodhay: father John (38, Labourer), mother Maria (40), and brother David (11, Scholar).[4]
In 1881 Henry Baker (age 24, Clerk to Corn Salesman) was a boarder in Greenham in the household of Frank T Decarle (33, Railway Clerk) - also in the household were Frank's wife Emily C Decarle (32), their niece Elizabeth Welford (9, Scholar), and visitor Rose E Jessett (22, Drapers Assistant).[5]
Henry Baker married Rose Emma Jessett in 1882. The marriage was registered in Reading, Berkshire in the third quarter of the year.[6]
In 1891 Henry Baker (age 34, Corn Merchants Manager) lived at Jubilee Road in Greenham with his wife Rosa E (32) and two sons: Ernest H (6, Scholar) and Alfred F (3).[7]
In 1901 Henry Baker (age 41 [~44], Corn Salesman & Buyer) lived at Crescent Road in Reading St Giles with his wife Rosa E (42) and five children: Ernest H (16, Carpenter & Joiner's Apprentice), Alfred F (13), Rosa D (8), Agnes N (6), and Walter D (3).[8]
In 1911 Henry Baker (age 54, Commercial Traveller for Corn Meal Cake & Flour Merchants) lived in Reading with his wife Rosa Emma (52) and three children: Rosa Dorothy (18, Drapers Assistant), Agnes Nellie (15, Drapers Apprentice), and Walter Douglas (13, School), as well as his sister Jane Baker (56, Needlewoman) and niece Florence Margery Hill (17, Drapers Apprentice).[9]
In 1921 Henry Baker (age 65) lived in Reading with his wife Rosa Emma (63) and three others: Adah Laviniza Glazcock (60), Walter Doris Dighton (59), and Agnes Hopgood (50).[10]
He passed away on 17 Feb 1922 in Reading:
"BAKER Henry of 196 King's-road Reading died 17 February 1922 Probate London 21 April to Rosa Emma Baker widow and Edwin Charles Midwinter corn merchant. Effects £668 9s. 3d."[11]
