Howard is the son of Absalom Baker. Howard was a Civil War veteran. Howard married Elizabeth Ann Freese on 12 December 1867 in Monroe, Indiana. They had at least ten children. Howard died in 1884 in Monroe, Indiana and is buried in Burch Cemetery, Kirksville, Monroe, Indiana. Elizabeth applied for Civil War widow’s pension (claim #237259) by the end of March, 1884. [1]
In 1870, the family lived in Van Buren Township, Monroe, Indiana. The household included Howard, 30, a merchant; his wife Elizabeth, 24, whose mother was of foreign birth; and their children, Nora, 2, and Innom (Harley), an infant born in December 1869. Also living with them was Eva Hall, 14, domestic servant, born in Indiana. [2]
In 1880, the Baker family lived in Van Buren, Monroe, Indiana. The family included H.A. Baker, 39, born in Indiana (parents b. NC), a merchant; his wife, Elizabeth, 34, born in Ohio (father b. England; mother b. PA); their children, all born in Indiana, the eldest four in school: Nora, 12; Harley, 10; Lulu, 9; Raymond, 7; Fred, 4; Claris, 2; and Grant (Lon), an infant, 6 months of age, born in December 1879. Living nearby was H.A. Baker’s brother, R. H. Baker, 54, a teamster; his wife, Nancy; and two daughters.[3]
