Biography

John Baker was born in 1806 in what is now Greenbrier, West Virginia. He is the son of Michael Baker, Sr. and Hepzibah Turley. John and his brother, Michael, Jr. traveled to Missouri on horseback and John ended up settling in Johnson County, Missouri with his wife, Myra Pemberton. John was very active in the town affairs and bought the first water mill in the western part of the country in 1849. The mill was burnt during the civil war by the Militia. [1]

John passed away in 1884.

1801 - Michael Baker (abt.1781-1865) (John's father) buys land in Greenbrier, WV and has a farm house built for him in 1822. The house is now known as the Michael Baker House.Michael sold the house in 1835 when he headed out west with his family.[2]

  • 1860 Census - Rose Hill, Missouri. John Baker (34) listed as Farmer being born in VA and married to Myra Baker (41). Children in household listed are Lewis W. (age 17 ), William H., Izora F. (12), Lucy H (7), Madora M and Ora E (Twins - age 3), Cyrus E. and Silas E (Twins - age 1). [3]
  • 1870 Census - Marshall, Saline, MO. Lists John Baker (63) as Farmer born in VA, Mrya W. (52) born in VA, Izora F .(22) born in MO, Lucy H (17) born in MO, Ora Ella Baker (13) born in MO, Dora May Baker (13) born in MO, Cyrus E.Baker (10) born in MO, and Silas E. Baker (10) born in MO. No mention of Lewis W. in this record. He would have been 27 at the time and believe he was back in VA. [4]
  • 1880 Census - Grand Pass, Saline, MO. Lists John Baker (73) as Farmer born in West VA. Myra not listed which makes sense since she died in 1878. Children listed are Lucy H. (25), Cyrus E (21) and Silas E (21). Looks like daughter Izora F. and husband Archibald Deckard live in unit next door with their family. [5]
  • Find A Grave Record - Lists John as being born September 11, 1806 in VA and dying on May 10, 1884 in Saline County, MO. He is buried in Union Cemetery in Malta Bend, Saline County, MO. Spouse listed as Myra Wood Baker and children listed as Izora Frances Deckard, Joe Baker (believe he was grandchild of John), Silas Edwin Baker, Lucy Helena Little, Madora Shamburg, and Cyrus Edgar Baker. William H., Lewis W., Ora E., and Silas E. not listed. [6]
