Winterset, Ia. Wednesday, May 26, 1943

William N. Baker, one of Madison county's few surviving pioneer citizens, died in Winterset Sunday. He had been ill several weeks, following a fall in which he suffered a fractured hip. He was 89 years of age.

Mr. Baker was born near Burlington, in Des Moines county, on Feb. 28, 1854, the son of Daniel and Fanny Baker. About two months later, in April of the same year, he came with his parents to Madison county. They settled on a farm in Walnut township, which continued to be his home until 1938, when he moved to Winterset.

On April 30, 1884, he was married to Emma Young. They were the parents of seven children, of which two died in infancy. His wife died in January, 1941.

He is survived by two sons, Grover C. Baker of Winterset and Cloyd W. Baker of Des Moines; three daughters, Mrs. T.C. Landis and Mrs. John Frey of Des Moines and Mrs. Virgil Fenimore of Winterset; six grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. I.E.T. Wilson and Mrs. George Black of Winterset; and two brothers, Sherman Baker of Winterset and Eldon E. Baker of Flint, Mich.

Funeral services were held Tuesday from the Winterset Methodist church, in charge of the pastor, the Rev. W.A. Samp. Burial was made in the Peru cemetery.
