Richard Edward St. Barbe Baker was born on 9 October 1889 in South Stoneham, Hampshire, England[1][2]. His parents were John Richard St. Barbe Baker and Charlotte Purrott.[3][4]
"St. Barbe", as he was known to his friends[5], was a forester, environmental activist and author. While living in Kenya in 1924, he founded Men of the Trees, which later became the International Tree Foundation.[6] He was also a devout member of the Baha'i Faith and provided advice on tree planting for the gardens at the Baha'i World Centre in Haifa, Israel.[5]
Richard St. Barbe Baker was married twice: to Doreen W. Long (1948; div)[7], with whom he had two children; and to Catriona Burnett (1959; his death).[8][5] The second marriage was on 8 October 1959 at St David's Pioneer Memorial Church in Cave, Canterbury, New Zealand.[9]
During World War I, he served in the British army with the King Edward's Horse cavalry regiment and was wounded at least three times in battle, for which he was awarded the Military Cross.[10]
Richard St. Barbe Baker died on 9 June 1982 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada.[11][12] He was 92.
There is a memorial amongst the trees in the Memorial Gardens, High Street , West End[13].
