Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
John Baker was a Maryland colonist.

Origin

No birth record for John Baker has been found. His birth year of 1687 is an estimate based on his mother's 1703 will where she stated:

I leave my son John Baker to be under the tuition of my son Morrice Baker and to work for him the said Morrice Baker whom I make my executor until the said John Baker shall come to age 18 years and not to make any bargain for anything til the said John Baker shall come to age 21.[1]

Property

John Baker was living in Baltimore County and married to a woman named Margaret by 10 JUN 1714 when he sold a 50 acre tract called the Range located on the north side of the Severn River in Anne Arundel County to Henry Wright for £21 sterling. Both John and his wife signed the deed with their mark.[2] He must have inherited property from his father because on 21 FEB 1722 he conveyed a 40 acre tract called Baker's Delight located on the north side of the main falls of the Patapsco for £20 sterling to John Buckingham.[3]

John Baker was living in Soldier's Delight Hundred by 1737 with his two sons, Dom'n Baker and Abner Baker as listed on the Baltimore County Tax List. [4]

On 18 JUL 1752 John Baker conveyed a 50 acre tract called Jone's Mistake for £12.10.0 to John Hawkins, and Margaret Baker signed to release her dower right in the property. [5] No more evidence of John Baker was found in the Baltimore County Deeds and no probate records have been found.

Marriage & Family

John Baker was married before 1714 to a woman named Margaret. They were the parents of three known children:

Charles b. abt. 1715
Abner b. abt. 1717
Indimeon b. abt. 1720[6]

There appears to be a conflict in the name of one of John Baker's (Baker-12889) son. The profile shows one of his sons to be Absalom Baker, Jr (Baker-7488), while the Marriage & Family section shows his 2nd son to be Abner Baker. Is there a confirmed source for either Absalom or Abner? I have seen references to Abner in my research including the 1737 tax record where John Baker lived in Soldier's Delight. However, a notice was posted on 29 May 1755 in the Maryland Gazette about a stray horse being held at the plantation of Absalom Baker near Soldier's Delight.

Why do you say Jr when he was a Sr? He also had a son:

Abner Baker 1722–1765 BIRTH 1722 • Baltimore, Baltimore, Maryland, United States

DEATH 1765 He also had 3 other sons: Indemeon, John, and Charles I have them in My Ancesty tree but not put them here.
