Clarence Colgrove's Uncle James Gilbert Baker had just bought a brand new car in 1930. (Uncle Jim was actually an uncle on both sides of our family because he was the brother of Clarence's mother, Liza, and was married to one of Clarence's father's sisters.) Uncle Jim had been drinking too much to drive so one of the Colgrove boys, most likely Clarence (aged 19) or Jesse (aged 16), got in the car with him to drive him home. They were involved in a car accident that Uncle Jim did not survive. Which ever boy it was driving the car, he had a terrible time dealing with the grief of Uncle Jim's loss to both his Colgrove and Baker family members and ended up spending some time at the Terrell State Mental Hospital.

My belief that Clarence may have been the person driving the car is based on the following facts: The oldest living son of Henry and Liza Colgrove in 1930 was Hubert. Hubert was already married with two children at the time of the accident and was most likely to have been with his family, not out picking up his uncle. I knew Hubert and never heard of him ever having any mental instability during his leftime. The rest of the Colgrove boys at the time of the accident were Jesse (16), Clyde (14) and Coleman (11). I don't think my grandfather Clyde would have been old enough to be called on by his Ucle Jim to drive his brand new car and he may not have even been living at home with his family at that point. (He left home sometime in 1929-1930 to escape abuse at the hands of his father.) Coleman was clearly too young. That leaves either Jesse or Clarence as the likely driver on the evening of the accident.

Clarence died December 20, 1930, just 8 1/2 months after the car accident. He died from kidney failure.
