Thomas was born about 1845 in Xenia, Ohio.[1] He was a laborer in Ohio when he enlisted in the 55th Massachusetts in Readsville, Massachusetts during the Civil War.[1] He was a drummer which indicates that he was a youth when he enlisted.[2][1] After the war, he re-enlisted 22 March 1867 and was stationed at Fort Duncan, Texas with Company K, 24th Infantry as a musician.[3] Unfortunately he died 20 February 1870 when he was accidentally shot.[3] He was originally buried at Camp Eagle Pass, but was re-interred 7 May 1900 at the San Antonio National Cemetery on 24 February 1870 in Section F, Site 1152.[4][5]
