Another of the old and respected residents of this district has passed over to the great majority in the person of Mr William Bakes, who died this morning at the residence of his son, Joseph Bakes, Back Creek, at the age of 81 years. The deceased had been ailing for some time, and despite all medical aid, and careful nursing, passed quietly away as stated. He was a native of Bradford, England, and a colonist of 51 years, arriving in this country in 1857 [October 1856]. His first work was in assisting in the contract of the Princes Bridge, Melbourne, afterwards wending his way to the Ovens gold fields, where he followed the occupation of a miner. He finally settled down at Lake Harvey, where he selected land. His wife predeceased him about 22 years ago. He leaves a family of two sons and three daughters, 36 grandchildren, and 14 great grandchildren. The remains will be interred in the Yackandandah cemetery tomorrow (Friday). The funeral cortage will leave the residence of Mr J Bakes at 1.30. Local and General (1908, June 4). The Yackandandah Times (Vic. : 1890 - 1931), p. 2.
