Biography

Jacob Bakker was born 4 Sep 1906 in Bolsward, Friesland, Nederland, as son of Sybe Kornelis Bakker and Anna Henderika Hillegonda Germs.^[1]

He was a 1927 graduate of Technical College in Holland. A self-employed electrical engineer, he lived and worked in Indonesia for the Overseas Electric and Gas Company, and in World War II was interned in a Japanese concentration camp. After the war, he returned to Indonesia to rebuild the power stations in Sumatra. He emigrated to the United States in 1958.

Mr. Bakker settled in New York, where he worked at an electrical-generating equipment export company. He moved to Stephentown, N.Y., retiring in 1971. He moved to Salisbury Estates in Pittsfield in the late 1980s.

He married (1) 5 Apr 1934 in Singapore to Georgine Frederique Eveline Johanna Zenobie van Tengnagell. She died 27 Jun 1973.

He married (2) in 1982 to Eugenie DeCarlo Hassan of Lanesborough. She died in 1988.

Jacob Bakker, 99, died Wednesday evening, Dec. 28, 2005, at Hillcrest Commons, where he had resided for the past three weeks.

He leaves a daughter, Judith Boot-Bakker of The Spinnakers, Dorset, United Kingdom; a son, Walter Van Lier, of Harlingen, The Netherlands; his companion of 17 years, in High Prior, with whom he resided; two grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
