Biography

Email (condensed) from Liz Rath Miller Nov. 14, 2005: Allen was married twice, he married Sophia after Marilla died. Marilla may of died from childbirth complications since she died not long after Jay was born. After Marilla died, Allen hired Sophia as a hired girl to take of the children and keep house. Liz thinks Sophia had her hands full as she was also pregnant. Sophia came from a very prominent family in Waterloo. The story goes that she got pregnant by someone in Waterloo that her family wouldn't allow her to marry. They sent her out in the country to work on a farm so no one would find out she was pregnant. You will notice that Agnes was born in 1881 and Sophia & Allen got married in 1882. Agnes was not Allen's child, but he raised her as his own. Liz noticed on Allen's disabilities papers from the army he did not claim her as one of his dependents, he only named six. The Sergeant's & Baldwin's were very prominent families in Hudson, IA. There is a park on the edge of Hudson named Sergeant Park in their honor. Warren and Lucy Baldwin were buried in Elmwood Cemetery in Waterloo, about 10 miles from Liz's house in Cedar Falls.
