Notes

Note N35According to Uncle Lawrence worked as an engineer for one of the narrow gauge railroads during the timbering years in Buchanan county. Stayed with a runaway train at a lumber camp in Kennel Branch. Never married.

He was shot by Melvin Parsley of Crum WV, supposedly over his wife, Sena Mae (Dingess) Parsley in Kenova WV while employed by the Yellow Poplar Lumbar Company. 1

From Herb Lawson (lhdawson@@suddenlink.net) who was acquainted with Melvin Parsley.

"When Melvin Parsley married Mae Dingess, I believe Mae was 13 years of age. The pictures that I have seen of her would indicate that she was a very beautiful woman. Her father, William Dingess, was a merchant in Crum, WV. Jacob Baldwin and Mae Parsley got on the train at Crum, WV. and headed to Kenova. The road was a gravel road to Kenova by the County Road. The story is told that Melvin Parsley hired a guy by the name of George Jackson to shoot the couple as they got off the train. They couple in the car must have driven like crazy in order to beat the train to Kenova by way of passenger car. When Melvin Parsley arrive at the train station in Kenova, his companion, George Jackson, refused to shoot Jake Baldwin and Mae Parsley. Melvin Parsley shot his wife, who was pregnant at the time, and Jake Baldwin. Jake Baldwin was probably killed instantly, or nearly so. Mae lived to be taken to a hospital where she died.". 1

Registered for WW1 draft and listed employer as White Oak Lumber Co. Davenport VA. Had light blue eyes, light hair and was of medium build. 1

Death certificate states cause of death as gunshot wound to the abdomen, loss of blood and shock and a train engineer.
