Biography

William was born on April 25, 1846 in Warren County, Indiana, son of John Bales and Nancy McMullins according to his death certificate.[1] There are some sources which show his birthdate as in 1843.

William was married to Rebecca Peacock on December 29, 1863 in Indiana.[2]

He passed away on March 7, 1918, in Winchester, Randolph, Indiana.[3] He is buried in the Union Chapel Cemetery in Carlos, Randolph County, Indiana. A memorial can be found on Findagrave.

1880 United States Federal Census - In 1880, the census shows William D. Bales, 37, farming in West River Township in Randolph County, Indiana. Also enumerated were his wife, Rebecca, 34, and children, Alonzo L., 15, Sarah T., 11, and Mary J., 8.[4]

1900 United States Federal Census - In the 1900 census, William is enumerated as William B. and as being 57 years old and Rebecca as 64. They are living in West River Township, Randolph County, Indiana, where William is farming. Also living in the household is their son, Charles E., 18, and grandsons Alonzo T. Coggeshall, 8, and William W. Coggeshall, 1.[5]
