Biography

When Joseph A. Bales was born on July 31, 1825, in Highland City, Ohio, his father, John, was 22 and his mother, Martha, was 19. He married Nancy D. Swank on October 18, 1846, in Williamsport, Indiana. They had 13 children in 25 years. He died on March 28, 1908, in Lansford, North Dakota, having lived a long life of 82 years.

Enlisted in Company K, Iowa 39th Infantry Regiment on 22 Aug 1862. Promoted to Full 5th Corporal. Promoted to Full 3rd Corporal. He was captured by Confederate troops on 5 Oct 1864 at Altoona, GA and held at Andersonville Prison until the end of the war. Mustered out on 09 Jun 1865 at Camp Chase, OH.
