Biography

US Black Heritage Project
Noah Baley is a part of US Black heritage.

Noah Baley, was born enslaved about 1827 per the Deed of Manumission that indicated he was 6 years old at the time. He was enslaved by John Gorsuch and then Edward Gorsuch.

Noah is named in the 1833 Deed of Manumission of John M. Gorsuch that would take effect when he reached the age of 28, about 1855.

Noah was described as a light mulatto man, about five feet nine or ten inches high and tolerably stout built. He was usually called Noah Baley (aka Buley). Noah was to serve for the term of twenty two years, from the Manumission date of 1833. Another description, "Buley is described as a copper colored mulatto and of treacherous disposition."[1]

Family

Noah's mother was called Lydia Buly in the Deed of Manumission written by John M. Gorsuch in 1833.

Christiana Resistance

Noah did escape from the Edward Gorsuch farm on November 6, 1849 along with Nelson, George and Joshua, also enslaved by Gorsuch. [2]It is not known if he was implicated in the Resistance. See Christiana Resistance for more details.

Slave Owners

  1. John M. Gorsuch
  2. Edward Gorsuch acquired his title to slaves under the will of his Uncle John Gorsuch.[3]

Research Note

  • The category, "Maryland, Free People of Color" was added to this profile. It is not known if he actually received his FPoC status since he escaped and was considered a fugitive in 1849. There is a black Noah Bailey listed on the 1850 census for Talbot, Maryland on Ancestry, but it is unlikely it is the same person. More research needed.

Baley-166 and Baley-139 appear to represent the same person because: Same enslaved person...profile did not show up when I did a search.
