Marian Balfour was born in 1860 at Croydon in Surrey, the daughter of Lewis Balfour and his wife Sarah, born Sarah Walker Comber [1] [2].
In 1861, Marian was living at 6 Bedford Villas on the Sydenham Road in Croydon with her parents Lewis and Sarah W. Balfour, her elder sister, and her aunt (mother's sister) Emily. Her age was given as 4 months, implying a birth date in 1860. Her birthplace was given as Croydon, Surrey [2].
Marian's father was a silk trader. She was a student at London University in the fall of 1880 when she married the 36 year old solicitor, Edward Rusk. In the census the following spring, the newlyweds were living at 44 Gordon Square, Tottenham Court, and Marian was still listed as an undergraduate student at London University.
In 1901, her husband was knighted and Marian became Lady Marian Busk.
Evidence suggests that the couple were childless. Sir Edward died in 1926, leaving her an estate of just over £50,000. When she died fifteen years later, she left an estate of over £136,000. Lewis Balfour, bullion broker was named. This was her father's name, so this was likely a brother or nephew.
Dame Marian is buried in Checkendon Churchyard with her husband, Sir Edward.
