Biography

CHAPTER VI THE REUBEN BALIS FAMILY We are descended from Reuben Balis and his wife, Charlotte Stanley. Reuben was born in Greene Co. N.Y. , a son of John and Eunice Jennings Balis (Daughter of Joseph Jennings and Elizabeth Rumsey Bostwick. See "History and Genealogy of Old Fairfield (Ct.)"). He was born 27 Oct 1785 and was four years old when his father, John Balis, Sr., died. Soon he moved with his mother and sisters to Sharon, Ct., and later to Hubbardton, Rutland Co., Vt. following his uncle, Joseph Jennings. To him his family owed much of its prosperity. He was usually entrusted with a share of the town's offices, representing it in the Legislature of 1845 and 1846, as also did his son, William, in 1863 and 1864. He married Charlotte Stanley 7 Dec 1808 at Hubbardton, Rutland, Vt. and died 13 Jan 1872 at Eola, Naperville Twp., DuPage, Ill. Their children were: 1. Eunice Balis b 22 Sep 1809 Hubbardton, Vt. She married Freeman Pollard ca 1836. She died 30 Apr 1869 at Aurora, Kane, 111. bur Spring Lake Memorial Cemetery. 2. John Balis b 16 Apr 1811 Hubbardton, Vt. m Ruth Pratt 1 Oct 1834. He died 7 Apr 1891 DeKalb Co., Ill, bur Mound Rest Cemetery. 3. Julia Ann Balis b 9 Mar 1814 Hubbardton, m John Hale before 1844 2nd Myrtle H. Ketcham 12 Sep 1855. No children from 2nd marriage. Julia Ann last found in the 1880 census Maple Park, Kane Co., 111. 4. Charlotte S. Balis b 29 May 1816 Hubbardton, married Stephen Bradley 1 June 1837. She died 1 Sep 1867 at Hubbardton. 5. Reuben Page Balis b 2 5 Oct 1818 Hubbardton m Elizabeth Easton 20 Mar 1845 at Benson, Vt. He died 9 Nov 1900, bur Mound Rest Cemetery, DeKalb Co. Ill. 6. Betsy M. F. Balis b 13 Jul 1821 Hubbardton, Vt. m Eli Root 20 Feb 1840 at Hubbarton. She d 29 July 1901 Maple Park, Virgil Twp., Kane Co. Ill. 7. Sallie J. Balis b 17 Nov 1823 at Hubbardton m Samuel Loren Easton 13 Jul 1843 . She died May 1858 Hubbardton, Rutland Co. Vt. 8. Martha Dorleska Balis b 12 Sep 1826 Hubbardton, Rutland, Vt. Married Oliver Hazzard Perry Ketcham, 4 March 1848 probably at Hubbardton, Rutland, Vt. died 17 Aug 1855 Sudbury, Rutland, Vermont, buried Willow Brook Cemetery, Sudbury, Vermont. 9. William Balis b 2 Oct 1829 Hubbardton, Rutland, Vt., married Julia D. Resssiquie, 3 June 1858, and died 21 March 1916, St. Charles, Kane, 111. and was buried 25 March 1916 at North Cemetery, Kane, Ill. 10. Henry Clay Balis was b 25 April 1832 in Hubbardton, Rutland, Vt. and married Margaret Ketcham on 20 Feb 1855 at Sudbury, Rutland, Vt.
