Franklin was born in 1824 in Virginia. He married Harriett Glasscock, the daughter of Hezekiah Glasscock and Edith Bishop. According to Mrs. Ball, "three of their children, Roberta, Talcot Elisha, and Richard Johnson, were born in Fauquier County, Virginia. The oldest, Roberta, born April 16, 1851, died when she was 18 months old." Franklin and Harriet came to Missouri in 1858 in a covered wagon (as related by their granddaughter Nannie E Ball). "Aunt Peggy Painter, a sister to Harriet Ball and a recent widow, came with them:; the story goes that Aunt Peggy sat in a rocking chair in the covered wagon and rocked Richard Johnson Ball, then a small baby, as they traveled westward." Later they moved to Texas and five more children were born to the couple: Benjamin Franklin, Henry Arthur, Virginia Lee, William Edward and Luther Otis. Franklin Died in 1891 in Gordonville, Texas.

"Pappy (Frank Alonzo Ball) is listed as a traveling salesman in 1920, a special insurance agent in the 1930 census record and a Fire Insurance agent in the 1940 census. His father Henry Arthur Ball was listed as a traveling salesman in the 1910 census record and a sewing machine salesman in the 1920 census. Henry's father, Franklin Ball is listed as a farmer in the 1850,1860 and 1880 census records. I remember reading some letters from Ball relatives that I have filed that he was also a slave trader before the Civil War and a merchant as well as a farmer after the Civil War. His father, William Ball (my Great x 4 Grandfather) was a wheelwright and repaired wagon wheels of pioneers traveling west."
