Garden Clarkson Ball was the son of Alexander Kelsall Ball and Emily Heyward Clarkson. During World War II he served as a lieutenant in the United States Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1945. A bomber pilot, he was shot down in the last year of the war and spent ten months as a prisoner of war. In 1945 he married Ida Penn Shackleford. In 1946 they moved to Mobile, Alabama. He was a Vice President of Alabama Dry Dock and Shipbuilding Company. He was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Mobile.
