Biography

John Ball was born in 1640 at Mamhead, Devonshire, England. He was of the Balls of Dungannon, Co. Tyrone, Ireland, and descended from the Devonshire landed-gentry Ball family as appears from their coat of arms. In about 1667 John Ball married Mary Nehemid, b: ca. 1645 in Devonshire, England. Either they married in Ireland where the Ball family also owned estates or they moved there shortly after their marriage as all 3 of their known children were born in Dungannon, County Tyrone, Ulster, Ireland. Their children were:

  1. Thomas Ball, b: 1670 in Dungannon, Co. Tyrone, Ulster, Ireland
  2. Ruth Ball, b: 25 Feb. 1677, Dungannon, Co. Tyrone, Ireland
  3. Benjamin Ball, b: ca. 1679 in Dungannon, Co. Tyrone, Ireland

In April 1686, John Ball and his family left Northern Ireland for Talbot County, in the English Colony of Maryland. John Ball and his family were Quakers. On 28 April 1686, John Ball purchased 300 acres from Col Vincent Lowe, lying on the west side of Tuckahae. Unfortunately, John Ball died before June 15, 1686, when his land patent was allocated to his son and heir, Thomas Ball. The plantation was called "Coallen" or "Cowalyn," located at Bolton, Tilghman Island, Talbot County, Maryland. It was named after a location near their home in Co. Tyrone, Ireland. [1]
