Biography

Mary Ball was born c1725 in Virginia, daughter of Samuel Ball and Ann Taylor. She was the first cousin of Mary Ball Washington, mother of George Washington. Mary was not called Patty as some genealogies state."Samuel Ball's children were: i. Judith, m. John Hackley, vestryman, St. Mark's ii. Mary, m. Robt. Green. '(Mary was not Patty, as stated in St. Mark's Par. His. by Slaughter).' iii. Margaret, m. John Barrow. iv. William Ball m. Frances Slaughter. [1]

Mary Ball married Robert Green; both were mentioned in the Culpeper, Virginia 1751 will of her father Samuel Henry Ball. He named "daughter Mary Green" and executors "sons in law John Harkley, Robert Green...." [2]

Their son Samuel B. Green married Elizabeth Blair of Port Royal, Winchester on May 23, 1799 in Frederick County, Virginia and had at least two children, Samuel and Sally Green. (needs source)

Research Notes

  • co-manager Dick Lambert replied in a private email to me "used the dates of the children's birth to estimate her birth date; other info matches Crossed Brush Studio source."
  • "Crossed Brush Studio" is the internet home of The Windows Into Our Past series (eight volumes at this point) by Judy Parsons Smith.

Marriage

Following posted as comment on her husband Robert's profile (11 March 2020):

They were married by the time of her father's will, 16 August 1751, where she is named "daughter Mary Green" & son in law Robert Green is one of the executors (see transcription).

Marriage c1750 in Loudoun County appears to be from Judy Parsons Smith's research (here), but she notes that the source is unverified: "Information from OneFamily.com – unverified source." (Endnotes, [cxxvii] & [cxxviii].)

Looking at changes for this profile, at one time the marriage showed as 1746, in Northumberland County (this changes page - no source apparent).

And DAR records include son Armistead as a Patriot Ancestor - with a birth year of c1745, which would push the marriage date to c1745, if not earlier:

Daughters of the American Revolution, DAR Genealogical Research Databases, database online, (http://www.dar.org/ : accessed 11 March 2020), "Record of Armistead Green", Ancestor # A046800.

See also this record, which has marriage c1743.
