William grew up in Snickerville, later called Bluemont, VA. He was a wheelwright, possibly apprenticed to Timothy Carrington, his neighbor and a wagon maker. William's parents have been impossible to prove with any certainty. He fought in the war of 1812. He married Permelia Akers - both names carry alternate spellings in the sources - and had three children - Edward, Franklin and Margaret. After Permelia's death, he married Rosanna Davis and had several more children - among the possibilities are Mary (1834), Jane Ann (uncertain - may have left home before the 1850 census and can't be located elsewhere), James William, Cornelia, Thomas, Susan, John Milton and Francis Marion. He died in 1851.
