Samuel Ball was born to Jacob Ball and Jane (Distin) Ball in Westerncoombe, South Pool, Devon, England and christened on 11 August 1833 in South Pool, [1] the seventh of nine children. The 1851 census shows him working as an ag lab servant in the household of Thomas Cornish.[2]
On 12 April 1858, [3] Samuel married Elizabeth Patey, also from South Pool, and almost immediately began his seafaring career, so that Elizabeth often shows as managing the household on her own in various censuses. He began by becoming the boatswain (bo'sun) aboard the 'Daring'. The couple managed to have eight children, however: Sophia 1858, Annie 1861, William 1863, Samuel 1866, Emma 1869, John Ambrose 1871, Albert 1875, and James 1877. Doubtless he had many grandchildren, also - one of his children (William) had twelve children!
Samuel has risen in his chosen career; in the 1881 census he was registered as Mate (Merchant Service) on the 'Sarah Jane'.[4]
Samuel died on 22 July 1899. [5] He was 66.
