inventor of the black cravat
Edward, son of David Ball & Sarah, was baptised on 10 June 1798 in Lambourne, Essex, England.[1]
He inherited a vast sum of money (£41,000 a year - £3 million) from his step-grandfather, Admiral Edward Hughes (but had to take his surname), who had married his grandmother, Mrs Ruth Ball. Her eldest son was Captain Henry Ball R.N. and her second son David Ball was the father of "Golden Ball".
Edward married dancer Maria Mercandotti on 23 March 1823 in Banff, Banffshire, Scotland.[2] The couple were divorced in 1839.
"Golden Ball" had spent lavishly and gambled away his entire fortune. He fled to France, and never returned to England.
