Major James Ball "of Bewdley," Lancaster county, Virginia, was born in 1678 and died 13 Oct 1754, age 76.[1]

He married first on 15 June 1699 Eliza Howson who d 22 Jan 1704/5, probably daughter of Leonard Howson
He married second 10 Apr 1707 Mary (Conway) Dangerfield, dau of Col. Edwin and Sarah (Fleete) Conway and widow of John Dangerfield (who she m 11 Nov 1703). Mary was born 16 Feb 1686 and d 15 Sep 1730. Her tomb states that she was 44 in 1730. Her father's deed of 11695 giving land to his children by his first wife, "restrains his dau. Mary from marriage 'to any person whatever before the 16 of Feb 1702' under penalty of losing her estate. This was probably her 18th birthday.
He married third 25 Apr 1742 Mary Ann (Bertrand) Ballendine, b 1670, d 12 Feb 1749/50, dau of Rev. John Bertrand of Rapp'k Co., and wid. of Cap. Wm. Ballendine; her will was dated 12 Feb 1749-50; probated 8 Mar 1749

He married (1) Elizabeth "Eliza" Howson 15 Jun 1699 in Lancaster County, VA, USA, daughter of Leonard Howson. She was born Est. 1680, and died 22 Jan 1703/04 in Lancaster County, VA, USA. He married Mary Conway8,9,10 16 Apr 1707 in Bewdley, Lancaster County, VA, USA, daughter of Edwin Conway and Sarah Fleete. She was born 16 Feb 1685/86 in Lancaster County, VA, USA, and died 15 Sep 1730 in Lancaster County, VA, USA. He married (3) Mary Ann Bertrand 25 Apr 1742 in Bewdley, Lancaster County, VA, USA, daughter of John Bertrand and Charlotte DeJolie. She was born 1670, and died 12 Feb 1749/50.[2]

"In the name of God Amen I James Ball....
"Item I give to my Grand Son Burgess Ball all my lands in King George, Spootsilvania and Stafford Counties during his Natural life & at his decease I give it to his child or children as he shall think fit and to their heirs.
"Item I give to my Said grand son Twenty one Slaves viz. Dick, Brister, Adam Rawleigh, & Alice, I bought of my son James, Lucy & her four children and her three grand children, Letty and her Seven children and all their future increase when he [grandson Burgess] shall arrive to the aforeaid age or have lawful issue, that he be possessed and entitled to ye the said slaves and their increase as also what shall arrive from the profits of the said slaves, but in case my said Grand Son die before he come tothe age of twenty one and without lawful issue then I give the Said Slaves and profits to be eqully divided among my Son and five Daughters and their heirs.
"Item I give to my Said Grandson my clock and my two mares Blase and Francy & what stock I shall have on the land before given him and all their incrase when he shall come to the age aforesaid or have lawful issue.
"Item I give to my Daughter Sinah and my four grand Sons viz Jesse Ball, son of my Daughter Frances, James Ewell and James Ewell [sic] son of eve Ewell and John Selden and their heirs five thousand acres of land inPrince Wm County be laid off at the upper end ofmy mountain ract to them and their heirs equally amongst them.
"I give to my Daughter Eve one Slave named Sarah and all her Encrease which she has now only the use of.
"Item I give to my daughter Selden and her heirs ye land I bought of Benjamin Taylor. I give to my grandson Jon Taylor Fifty pounds Sterling to be paid him when he shall come to the age of twenty one but if he should die before that age then I give it to his Mother it being part of her portion.
"Item I give to my five Daughters all my household goods except my plate. The best bed and furniture which I give to my Son James.
"Item I give to my Grand Son Tobey Downman Thirty pounds to be laid out in land or a Slave and no otherways.
"I give to my grandson James Downman my watch and Silver Buckles.
"Item I give to my son James the use of all the remainder of my estate including my Slaves in his possession which he has now the use of all during his natural life and at his death to dispose of as he shall think fit.
"Item I do appoint my Son Exr of this my last will and testament and guardian to my grandson Burgess Ball and my will is that my estate be not appraised. In witness my hand and seal this 15th day of July 1754. JAMES BALL [Seal]. "Major Ball's second wife is given as b. Feb. 16, 1686. This date is reached thus: Her tomb states that she was 44 in 1730. Her bro. Ed. Conway was 80 in 1762, as per his will. Her father's deed of 1695, giving land to his children by his first wife, restrains her dau. from marriage 'to any person whatever before the 16 of Feb. 1702,' under penalty of losing her estate. This was pro. her 18th birthday. She joined her husband in a deed recorded Lanc'r Co., May 20, 1709, to Richard Ball for 8 negroes."[5]

[Footnote:] Lanc'r Co., Mar. 8, 1749. Dorothy Fountain and Elizabeth Ball swore this day that on her death bed, Feb. 12, 1749-50, Mrs. Mary Ann Ball devised her negroes and her estate between her daughters Hannah and Frances. James Ball, Jr., presented the certificate and the will was proven. (Bk. 14, 273, Est. Audit, id. 285)"

  • was a vestryman of Christ Ch., Lanc'r Co., and Ch. Warden, 1743.
  • in 1740 he and Mr. Joseph Ball were allowed to build a gallery in White Chappel for their families, provided that it be complete at the same time with the church and furnished in the same style with the west gallery. (Vestry Book.)
  • In 1743, the vestry directed him to build a 20x16 vestry house.
