Rose Fanny Ball was born in 1878 to William Ball and Fanny (Kent) Ball, [1] and baptised on 2 June 1878 in Hove, Sussex, England. [2] She was the first girl in the family (after four elder brothers: Arthur, Victor, Frederick, and Alfred) and the youngest, too.
Her father, William, had been a chief petty officer in the Navy, but by the time Rose was born, he had retired, and so the family were able to settle in one place: 36 Connaught Terrace, Hove, Sussex. They appear there in the census for the next 30 years.
Ros appears in the 1881 census, aged 3, living with her parents and four brothers, [3] and also in the 1891 census with the same family members. [4]
Her father, William, died in 1895, aged only 55, but the family continued living in the same house, and the 1901 census shows Rose there, aged 23, with her widowed mother, Fanny, Fanny's granddaughter Mabel Ball, and a boarder: assistant schoolmaster Cecil Gentry. [5]
In the 1911 census, Rose is still single and living at home with her widowed mother, still-single aunt Mary Earl Kent, and Mabel the granddaughter. They are not taking in boarders. The house, however, is fairly large - 6 rooms. [6]
