Biography

John Ballantyne was a convict after the Third Fleet transported to New South Wales

John Ballantyne was born in Paisley, Scotland in about 1814. He was the son of William Ballantyne and Mary Kennedy.

John was a weaver. He was convicted at Glasgow for housebreaking and stealing from his parent's neighbours on the 23 September 1833 [1], and transported to New South Wales in 1834 on the Henry Tanner (14 years). He was 5 foot and 4 ¾ inches tall, and had a ruddy & freckled complexion, sandy to red hair, and hazel eyes. [2]

John received permission to marry Annie Munro, a free settler, on the 22nd May 1840.[3] They married at Wollongong on the 14th September 1840.[4]

The family moved to the Shoalhaven area, and later to Woodburn where John died in 1898.[5] John and Annie are buried in the Woodburn Cemetery.[6]
