Biography

James Franklin Ballard, a manufacturer of medicines, was born 16 July 1851 at Ashtabula, Ohio. He was the son of James and Eliza (Heath) Ballard. He passed away in 1931.

Educated in the public schools of Almont, Michigan, James settled in St. Louis, Missouri in 1874. He was connected with Richardson & Co., wholesale drugs, as a salesman, until 1882.

He married on 24 June 1878 at Vincennes, Indiana to Emma Hill Hadley. They bought a house at 4420 Washington Boulevard, St. Louis, and had three children:

  • William J. Ballard
  • Berenice C. Ballard (Mrs. H. H. Clark Jr.), and
  • Helen E. "Nellie" Ballard.

After 1883, James F. Ballard established the Ballard-Snow Liniment Co., of which he became the proprietor.

Eventually he became a director of the Mechanics-American National Bank of St. Louis.

In 1923 he incorporated his business as James F. Ballard Inc., taking the title of treasurer. He also served as a director of the First National Bank in St. Louis, director of the St. Louis Union Trust Company, director of Fellows Medical Manufacturing Company in New York and an owner of the Henry B. Platt Company in New York.

An active participant in several civic interests, Ballard served as a trustee of the Missouri Historical Society, a member of the Executive Committee Archaeological Society of St. Louis, a Fellow for Life of the National Academy of Design in New York and a benefactor of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

His club memberships included Bankers, Lotos, Salmagundi, National Economic, Congressional Country Club, New York Water Color Society and the St. Louis Club.

A veteran traveller, James F. Ballard was known all over the world as the "Dean of Oriental Rug Collectors."

In 1924, he presented a collection of rare Oriental rug masterpieces, the value which exceeded one million dollars, to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. It was said to be the greatest of its kind ever assembled by any museum or individual. His personal collection was equal in value to that given to the museum.

Mr. Ballard risked his life, endured hunger, and was made a prisoner of war so that the rugs he was seeking could hang today on the walls of America's finest museums where they may be studied by all who love ancient art.
