Joseph Ballinger was born in New Jersey about 1681. Early in life, he left home, going first to Maryland, later to the Quaker settlements of Virginia. Before 1727[1] he settled in Henrico County, Virginia (that part which was cut off to form the county of Goochland). His will, probated in Goochland County, Virginia, February 1744/45, listed his children.
Henry Ballinger, father of Joseph, gave his sons, Joseph, Josiah, and Henry, 1200 acres of land in Salem, New Jersey which they sold. They had joined a group of Quakers headed by Alexander Ross, and Morgan Bryan in a plan to move to the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia.
Joseph's royal grant is recorded in Goochland County, Virginia. Joseph began life as a Quaker, but as he conformed to the ways of Virginia planters, and bought slaves of his own, he clashed with the teachings of the Friends, and perhaps was disowned by them, although no record of his disownment has been located. Joseph and his family then became members of the established Church of England (the Episcopal Church) and Joseph became a minister of the church and performed many marriage ceremonies. Some of this information is from "Three Generations of Ballingers in America" compiled by Emma Barrett Reeves.[2]
Note:
There is a coincidence that two Joseph Ballingers lived in Amelia/Henrico/Goochland, Virginia at the same time. One was a Huguenot that came to Virginia around 1700. The other Joseph (this profile) came to Virginia to Amelia/Henrico/Goochland from New Jersey. Be careful about this.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Joseph by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Joseph:
Looks like the merge may have been in the wrong direction and LNAB got changed to Ballinger from Ballenger. Can we get a source for birth spelling? Are there Quaker records we can use?
Ballinger-801 and Ballenger-49 appear to represent the same person because: I see no evidence of a second person, so the merge should proceed unless someone provides a source to document the existence of a second person. Rejected match removed and merge resubmitted.
