NOTE

There are two men, first cousins, named Alexander de Balliol, and they are often confused in the sources.

Alexander de Balliol of Cavers and Chillham Castle, Chamberlain of Scotland is the cousin, the son of Henry de Balliol not this man.

Biography

Alexander de Balliol was the third son of John de Balliol, and his wife, Devourgilla of Galloway.

He died slightly before 13 November 1278, when a writ was issued to Thomas de Normanvill, the King's steward to hold an inquisition post mortem into the estate of Alexander de Balliolo. The inquisition was held at Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Northumberland on Thursday after St Lucy, 7, Edward I. His brother John de Balliolo, aged 30 and more was his heir.[1]

This book mentions his widow on page 11 as being Eleanor de Genoure, and that Alexander died 1279 without issue
