Biography

Nathaniel Bancker was born November 27, 1727, in Phillips Burgh, Westchester county, New York, [1] and baptized March 20, 1728, in the Dutch Reformed Church, the son of Adolph and Marijtje Bancker. [2]

Church Record: 1728 Mar 20; Adolf Banken, Marytje Bancken; Nathaniel; Nathaniel Brouw, Juzua Brook, Sytje Brook. [3]

On May 21, 1747, Nathaniel married Hannah Conklin, daughter of Jan Conklin and Annatje (Storm) Conklin. [4] They settled on a farm in Rumbout's Precinct, in the vicinity of Fishkill, Dutchess county, New York.

Hannah, who was born September 24, 1720, died sometime after 1764. On June 2, 1768, at Poughkeepsie, John married Annatje DeWitt, daughter of Lucas DeWitt and Catharine Roosa. All of Nathaniel's children were by his first wife:

  • Mary Banker, born October 29, 1748, married Paul Vandervort
  • Stephen Banker, born February 5,1752, in New Castle, Westchester county, NY, soldier in the American Revolutionary War
  • Adolph Banker, born March 27, 1754, died January 22, 1822, married Ruth Oakley (October 21, 1756 - September 8, 1838); Adolph and Ruth are buried in the Millertown cemetery
  • Sarah Banker, born June 16, 1756, died April 12, 1836. married John Losee and resided near Hopewell, Dutchess county, New York
  • Elizabeth Banker, born September 19, 1759, married Peter L'Amoreaux
  • Magdalene Banker, born January 20, 1764

Will of Nathaniel Banker

Nathaniel made his Will June 9, 1772, being at the time "very sick." As it was probated July 16, 1772, he must have died soon after the date of the Will. After providing for funeral expenses and debts, he gives first, to his wife Annatje, "one cow and four pounds in money for her Dowre;" second, "to my son Stephen five Pounds for his Birth-Right;" third, the wife and children to be in possession of all property till fall, then the estate both real and personal to be sold at Public Vendue and the money to be equally divided between "my wife Annatje, and my son Stephen, and my son Adolph, my daughter Mary, and my daughter Elizabeth, and my daughter Magdalene, excepting a reduction of thirty pounds of Stephen's portion, likewise of Mary, what she hath had as Inventory Taken and so to be Reducted [sic] out of her portions, and to my brother's son Jeremiah, I give ten pounds when he comes to the age of twenty-one, and to be put out to a trade as he chooses to go;" lastly, "that my wearing clothes to be equally divided between my two sons Stephen and Adolph, and my two youngest daughters to be put out to Christian people by my executors and the two gray horses to be sold together for a team.
