Joseph Bangs was born 22 April 1743, and baptized 9 Dec 1744, the son of Joseph Bangs and Thankful Hamblen of Harwich, Barnstable, Massachusetts[1][2]
Joseph was one of the first to build ships in Liverpool, Nova Scotia[3], including the Betsey, and the Liberty, which figure in Perkins Diary[4]. He was master workman for Simeon Perkins and others on the construction and repair of mills and ships. He was admitted as a proprietor of the township of Liverpool before December 2, 1770. He was a constable in the community. On July 2, 1779, he was commissioned as second lieutenant in the Queen's county militia, and on August 12, 1793 as captain.
On July 2 1764, he married Mary Pitts[5][6], daughter of Thomas Pitts and Mary Howard[7] in Liverpool, Nova Scotia, and had children[8][9][10], including:
Mary, born April 1765, drowned in a well February 1773[10][4]
Sarah, born February 26 1767, who married Prince Snow[11][10]
Lydia, born March 26, 1769, who married Jacob Mitchell no December 20, 1787[12], and died in Saint Augustine, Florida[10]
Joseph Jr, born March 24, 1771[10], who married Dorcas Briggs and died at sea in the Caribbean[4]
Pitts, born September 26, 1777[10], whose wife was Lucy and daughter Tryphenia born February 17, 1810-02-17, baptized as an adult on May 3, 1829, and married John Atkinson Packin on May 4, 1829[13], and who died December 7, 1833, at 56 years[13]
Polly, born March 24, 1780[10], who married Andrew Remby on December 24, 1810[14],
Elizabeth born March 11, 1782, died June 4, 1784[10]
On 23 December 1790, Joseph remarried Lydia Gorham, the daughter of Jabez and Mary (Burbank) Gorham[10][16][4],[8], and had children, including:
Eunice Bangs, born November 6, 1791[10] , who married John Bayer[17]
Lydia Bangs, born 05 April 1794[8], who married Charles J. Wright in 1813[18]
He died March 21, 1801 in Liverpool, Nova Scotia[8]
