Biography

Charles Henry Bannister was born in 1867 in Tutbury, Burton on Trent, Staffordshire. He was the son of John Bannister and Elizabeth (Kelly) Bannister. His birth was registered in the last quarter of 1867, in Burton upon Trent district.

On April 2nd 1871, Charles' family was in Ripley, Derbyshire, and his father was employed as a labourer; he had no brothers or sisters. His birthplace is given incorrectly in the census as Ripley, which is a good distance from Tutbury.

Charles' family doesn't seem to have stayed long in Ripley, because he was christened on 17 Sep 1871 in Tutbury, when he was about four years old.

Charles' younger brother George Arthur Bannister was born in 1877 in Stockport, Cheshire; his birth was registered in the last quarter of 1877, in Stockport district.

By 1881, Charles' family were living in Baker Street, Heaton Norris (in Stockport district). Charles, aged 14, was working as a house painter; his father was working as a labourer. Charles had just the one sibling, George.

In 1886, at the age of 18, Charles enlisted with the Manchester Regiment. He seems to have thought his birthplace was Burslem, Staffordshire, and it appears as Burslem in all his military records. Burslem is in Stoke on Trent, which is a good distance from Burton on Trent.

Charles married Amy (Hill) Kerr on 22 Aug 1896 in Send, Surrey. He was 27 and hadn't been married before; she was 28 and a widow. Their fathers were named as John Bannister and John Hill.

Their son Percy Henry Bannister was born on 19 Jun 1899 in Guildford, Surrey.

Their son Leonard William Bannister was born on 26 Aug 1902[1] in Woldem, Kent. His birth was registered in the last quarter of 1902, in Malling district.

At the age of seven, Percy was sent to boarding school in Heaton Moor, Cheshire. His school was called Barnes Home Industrial School, and was a mixture of reformatory and school for deprived children; the school became his legal guardians.

On the outbreak of the First World War, Charles was 46; he enlisted with the East Surrey Regiment. By 1919, he was in the 642nd Home Service Employment Company, 336th Labour Company of the Labour Corps. Apparently he had put in enough years of military service to qualify for a Chelsea Pension.

Charles died in about 1920 in Guildford, aged 52 - his death was registered in the first quarter of 1920, in Guildford district.
