Edwin was the son of William Bannister and Mary Eades of Staffordshire, England.
Edwin Bannister arrived in New Zealand on the ship 'Bolton' in 1840. He landed in Wellington on April 30, 1840 after a voyage of some 4 1/2 months having departed from England November 19, 1839. Edwin travelled steerage with his parents William - an agricultural labourer, mother Mary, and brothers John Eades & Robert Elijah. Edwin’s family along with the rest of the Bolton's passengers were landed at Thorndon beach. Many of them lived in primitive shanties known as 'Boltons Row' until they could build themselves something more substantial.
Edwin was apprenticed to F Revans of the 'NZ Gazette' newspaper and subsequently worked on the 'Spectator' & 'Cook Strait Guardian', 'The Independent' and 'The Evening Post'. He later joined the staff at the government printing office until retirement. Edwin Bannister was well respected in the Wellington area and passed away in 1895 age 68 leaving a widow, 7 daughters and 4 sons. He is buried at Johnsonville in St John's Anglican churchyard. Edwin’s parents are buried at Bolton Street Memorial Park, Wellington
